Working as a research assistant for Shawn McCracken on his PhD project, we documented all species found within the Aechmea zebrina bromeliads. Climbing trees is no small feat for this researcher and the rewards are unusual species like this vicious little ant. The continuous biting of his mandibles could be heard as I took these photos.
El Rey de la Selva, Panacanthus cuspidatus
Crowned like a king, the spike-headed katydid, Panacanthus cuspidatus, is remarkably spiney. Found in the Ecuadorian Amazon rain forest while hiking at night.
Shag Moth Larva, Acharia sp.
An irritating and stinging rash is the result of brushing up against this Shag Moth Larva, Acharia sp. Chasing it down on the forest floor I photographed this specimen on my belly in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
